We have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Porth Avallen Hotel despite atrocious weather. The staff were outstanding and their friendliness and warmth of welcome was really appreciated. The food was of a very good standard and the chef took the time to ask us after each meal if everything had been ok and joined us as we were ordering to discuss the items on the menu and advise us as to the ingredients and cooking style. Through no fault of the staff or the hotel we found ourselves sleeping next door to someone who should challenge the Guiness books of records for snoring, we were moved to a better room without fuss and with great courtesy. We will return and have already recommended the hotel to friends and family. Thank you Porth Avallen.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect since this was our first trip to the area. As we turned off the main road, we realized we were in a very upscale neighborhood of beautiful homes overlooking the bay — very impressive. We found the Porth Avallen easily and although the outside looks just “average” (meaning not very deluxe and a bit old fashioned, if not “worn”), we were optimistic because of the neighborhood. We were greeted warmly by reception and ended up getting a lot of good information about the area, especially advice about a walking path that leads down to Charlestown, a cute little fishing village with a few places to eat lunch. Our room was not ready, so we set off for Charlestown (a delightful side trip) and by the time we returned, our room was ready as promised.

The hotel is furnished traditionally, in good condition but on the older fashioned side, with overstuffed chairs, English country house style. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, but I just find that “look” a little dated. Our room was quite large with a sensational view of the bay. (I highly recommend taking on of the two superior rooms of that size and view; otherwise I’m not sure what the rooms would be like.) We had a table and two easy chairs with a fantastic view all to ourselves.

For dinner, we were asked to come down to the lounge 15 minutes ahead of our reservation, for a drink and look at the menu, then we were seated in the restaurant when the first course was ready. The wait staff was very nice and the service was very good. The dining room is comfortable, although I think the lighting is a bit too bright. The menu had 3-4 choices for each course with vegetarian options included. We thought the food was very delicious and nicely presented, nothing was rushed or short-changed and there was an emphasis on locally produced foods. Dessert was especially noteworthy because we ordered one cheese plate for the two of us and it was huge!

Given the location of the hotel, the rooms are very quiet at night — we could leave the windows open for fresh air and had no noise at all. Waking up to a gorgeous view of the gardens and the bay was a great way to start a day.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant — a nice assortment of cold buffet items and a choice of hot items made to order. The room was quite full though, so there was a little congestion around the buffet table and it got extremely stuffy after a while.

Thanks to the location and the size/view from our room, we were very satisfied with our stay at the hotel. If there was something more modern, more boutique-style in the area with the same view, I’d probably go in that direction, but otherwise, Porth Avallen provides a very pleasant experience (at least in the largest rooms!)

A suprise break for my wife – with visits to the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast for three nights and had been given an upgraded de-luxe room with fantastic views over Carlyon Bay.
We chose to have dinner in the restaurant rather than in the bistro. The waitresses, Laura and Claire, were extremely pleasant and chatty – a delight compared to the surliness of some waitresses we have encountered. The owner, George, and the chef, John both found time to talk to us and were extremely helpful with travel advice and cooking techniques respectively. The food was of good quality and well prepared. It was not pub food and was priced accordingly.

All in all – a very pleasant stay. We will be back!

Was a bit worried as booked hotel and then viewed comments on Tripadvisor which seemed to really knock the hotel. I needn’t have worried because everything was fantastic. If you can pay a little more and get a superior room, I would recommend it. The views were absolutely stunning. The room was huge with two armchairs perfectly placed in the bay window. Watching the sun come up over the sea was fantastic. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was very modern and clean. Every need was catered for. The hotel generally was beautiful and full of charector. It was very tastefully decorated for the festive season with large Christmas trees and traditional decorations. The food was marvellous, I have never tasted such a fantastic sticky toffee pudding!! I do not think it overpriced. £30 for a three course meal served in very plush surroundings by very polite and helpful staff is very reasonable. The gardens would be marvellous in the summer months although very beautiful in the winter too. A lovely decked area to the side, again very tastefully done. So what if the owner doesn’t actually live in the property, what difference does that make!!! I feel previous comments about this hotel have been too harsh.I cannot praise this hotel enough and would highly recommend it.

  • Liked — Everything!
  • Disliked — Having to leave it!

The hotel staff were some of the best that we have ever encountered. They were polite, friendly, efficient and always cheerful. Those we spoke to were clearly very happy working at the hotel, always a good sign. Food was of a very high standard.

Wonderful Hotel
What a joy to come here, lovely accomodation, food, staff, they could not do enough for their guests, and always in a friendly manner, others should set their standards by this hotel and staff. Would love to stay here again, and would highly recommend it to anyone. Plus, the added advantage of the lovely views. Bliss and a great price too.

single travellers
Great location with outstanding views of the bay. Nice convenient walks to both bays.
The hotel makes the most from its hilltop location with great window views from the elegant modern bar and lounge area/patio. Likewise the food was very good and service very attentive.

Great Weekend Break
Good Hotel in excellent cliff-top location. Room was spotless and very comfortable, although the bathroom was a little small (not cramped). Breakfast excellent and all staff were professional and friendly. We ate in the hotel on one night and the food and service was very good. If you want to explore Cornwall, this makes a great base

My wife and myself spent the weekend at the Porth Avallen for our 20th wedding anniversary.
The hotel is in a wonderful location overlooking Carlyon bay.
Our room was large with a comfortable bed and good bath room.
The service from the hotel staff was wonderful, our every request was catered for.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone celebrating a special occassion.
It is also only a short walk along the coast path to Charles Town harbour and a good pub.
